How to identify and express your unique style in your home

Even in my own home, I’m still finding what works in each space by simply experimenting, standing back and assessing if it feels right, feels off or needs something added!

You know that moment when you walk into someone’s house, and it just feels like them? Like every little detail—down to the hand block printed cushions or color-coordinated bookshelves—tells you exactly who they are? Meanwhile, you’re over here staring at your own space, wondering why it looks more default settings than deeply personal.

Finding your unique style isn’t about following trends or copying Pinterest boards. It’s about learning to trust your own creative instincts, tuning into your energy to let it guide you to what feels right, and letting your space reflect you. And yes, you do have a unique style, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.

Let’s fix that. Here are three simple steps to help you uncover, embrace, and confidently express your personal style—without second-guessing yourself every five minutes.

Step 1: Listen to your intuition (yes you have one!)

Your innate style isn’t something you have to create—it’s already in you. The problem? You’ve been bombarded with so much outside influence that you’ve stopped listening to your own body’s messages.

So, let’s quiet the noise for a sec.

Think about a place (a home, a hotel, a café) where you instantly felt at ease. What did you love about it? The warmth of the lighting? The cozy layout and comfy furniture? The way everything felt just right without trying too hard or feeling too stiff?

Now, flip it. Have you ever walked into a space and immediately felt off? Maybe it was too sterile, too cluttered, or just didn’t align with your energy.

Your body picks up on these things before your brain does, and its always trying to communicate these preferences to you in the moment. So instead of forcing yourself into a design trend that “should” work (ie. expending brain calories), start noticing what genuinely makes you feel good—and let that body consciousness guide your choices.

Try this: Take a few minutes to sit quietly in different rooms of your home. What feels good? What feels wrong? Listen. Feel. Notice. Trust those gut reactions. They’re pointing you toward your true style.

Step 2: Find the common threads in what you love

You know that folder on your phone stuffed with screenshots of dreamy interiors? Or the Instagram Saved folder where you’ve saved 347 different living rooms? Let’s finally make sense of it all.

Look at your collection of saved images and ask yourself:

  • What colors pop up again and again?

  • Are you drawn to clean lines or softer, more organic shapes?

  • Do you lean toward minimal and airy, or layered and eclectic?

Chances are, a theme is already there—you just haven’t noticed it yet.

Try this: Scroll through your inspiration folder and write down three words that describe the feeling of the spaces you love (e.g. warm, organic, serene) rather than labels (give away Modern Country or Scandi titles… these can feel restricting to your creativity). Your emotive words will become your north star when making design decisions.

There’s nothing quite like stacking books, displaying collectables and trinkets from world travels and cutting an overflowing vase of fresh flowers or greenery to liven up a cozy, collected corner in your home!

Step 3: Express it without overthinking it

Now comes the fun part: actually bringing your style to life. And no, this doesn’t mean doing a full-scale home makeover overnight. It’s about making small but intentional changes that move your space closer to you.

Start with the easy stuff:
✔️ Swap out a few decor pieces that don’t align with your newfound style.
✔️ Rearrange your furniture to create better energy flow (yes, your couch placement does matter!).
✔️ Bring in textures, colors, or objects that evoke the feeling you want.

The key? Don’t force it. If you love an item—even if it doesn’t fit some textbook definition of “cohesive design”—it belongs in your home. Period.

Try this: Walk through your home and remove one item that doesn’t feel like you. Then, replace it with something that does. Do this week in, week out. Notice how these tiny alterations can shift the energy of the room overtime.

Final thoughts

Stop overcomplicating it! Trust your intuition, listen to your body, follow the common threads, and start making small, meaningful changes today. Before you know it, you’ll have a home that moves with the seasons and feels so unapologetically you—and that’s the best design choice you’ll ever make.
